JOBS PROSPECTS FOR HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT GRADUATES
FUELED BY BUILDING BOOM IN ASIA
Students and prospective graduates from hospitality colleges have excellent chances to find satisfying careers in the hospitality or tourism industry. This confidence is based on the trends of an un-abating building boom of hotels and resorts in tourism and business destinations in Asia. These will serve an ever-growing multitude of business travelers and a well-to-do population in industrialized countries, which can afford regular foreign holidays. These trends are supported also by full order books for the airlines manufacturing industry that produce larger and more fuel-efficient aircraft, which in turn make travel to destinations more inexpensive.
Within the next two years, more than 40000 new branded hotel rooms in 200 hotels, built by GHM, Swissotels, Mandarin Oriental, Mövenpick, Shangri-La, Traders, Radisson, Country Inns & Suites, Park Plaza, Regent, Marriott, Hyatt and Starwood Hotels, are coming on stream. It is estimated, that these new businesses require as many as 80000 employees. Further, many entrepreneurs will open businesses that compliment these hotels and local leisure and tourism industry and that in turn further increases the need for qualified staff. Also, many baby boomers that staffed the management floors of the international hotels industry are coming up for retirement, leaving management vacancies for educated and well-trained graduates.
How can a prospective student or graduate prepare her/himself to obtain one of these jobs?
Send your resume to as many hotel companies as possible – maybe you have the know-how they are looking for. Further, apply at the job placement office of your school - there they coach prospective graduates how to handle telephone interviews, help prepare a video resume and ensure that students are ready to apply for a job in a well-prepared manner.
Alternatively, for students wanting to avail of fees based job prospecting, there are many reputable employment agencies for jobs in regional or specialized hospitality markets. These agencies also help in preparing the extensive documentation as well as assistance with visa applications. Some of these entities specialize in time limited international internship positions and they select each year a number of graduates in specific countries.
Lastly, we recommend that prospective job seekers apply for their first job as early as possible, this to avoid a waiting period after their graduation.
Remember, the early bird…
